Race the MAC: Mountain Biking Comes to Castle Rock

Miller Activity Complex Mountain Bike Races

Attention all adventure-junkies, thrill-seekers, and fitness-freaks, Castle Rock has got a new challenge for you! The Miller Activity Complex, or MAC, will be hosting a series of mountain bike races this summer that will push you to your limits, encourage fitness through this fun, if intense, sport, and spark up a little friendly competition among mountain bikers of all skill levels.

Race the MAC - Miller Activity Complex Mountain Bike Races

Race the MAC in Castle Rock this Summer

The Race the MAC series will take place every Wednesday starting on July 15, 2015 for five weeks until a champion is crowned in August. The MAC facility’s trails are perfect for short-track mountain bike races. The single-track, 6-mile trail has a 680-foot elevation gain per lap with blind corners, switchbacks, steep climbs, and other challenging features, as well as gorgeous views of the surrounding area that will keep racers invigorated and inspired.

The MAC races will feature four different classes: junior, beginner, sport, and open class. The junior class is open to 11 to 17 year olds, the beginner class is for riders who don’t usually compete, the sport class is aimed at serious mountain biking enthusiasts, while the open class is a fast race for experienced riders. The course length, number of laps, and speed differ by class, ranging from 10 to over 18 miles. If you’re just in it for the fitness or the fun times, try out the everything class, which allows everything from single-speed to tandem bikes.

The race starts at a different time for each class:

  • Pre-Ride at 4:30 p.m.
  • Open Class at 5:45 p.m.
  • Sport at 5:50 p.m.
  • Fat bike, tandem, Cyclocross, etc. at 6:30 p.m.
  • Beginner and Junior at 6:35 p.m.

This family-friendly event doesn’t forget about the spectators. Cheer on your friends, neighbors, kids, or significant others without working up a sweat while sipping a beer or munching on snacks. All on-site food vendors are from local businesses and the beer garden is sponsored by Grist Brewing Company in Highlands Ranch. Best of all for paying participants? The beer is completely free.

The brand-new MAC, which just opened at Philip S. Miller Park last year, is hoping to encourage a love of mountain biking in Castle Rock homeowners. With its close proximity to so many tough, but ultimately beautiful mountain biking trails, Castle Rock is the perfect place to begin an adventure. Organizer Kyle Sipes is hoping to expand the race program next summer.

The Miller Activity Complex also features a three-story indoor play structure, a trampoline area, a zero-entry pool, a turf field, batting cages, a golf simulator, and much more. The exciting plans for the next few years include the addition of a zipline, a Snowflex, and a fieldhouse.

The Miller Activity Complex is located at Philip S. Miller Park, 1375 W Plum Creek Parkway in Castle Rock. Individual races are $30 or you can buy a series pass for $125. Register online in advance or preregister between 4:30 and 5:15 p.m. on the day of the race.
