Connecting Colorado via the East West Regional Trail

coast-to-coast-hiking-trail

Is there a plan to connect the trails that exist throughout the state of Colorado? How about to connect the trails throughout the entire United States? To some, these questions might seem far-fetched. But in reality, there actually are plans to eventually connect all of Colorado’s trails – and also trails throughout the United States. The East West Regional Trail in Douglas County is one of the first segments of the plan in Colorado.

While the physical act of connecting existing trails is going to take quite a bit of time to complete, the process has already started. In 2017, construction is slated to begin on the East West Regional Trail extension. This extension will connect trails that are between Parker and Lone Tree. This phase of the trail connection plan includes the addition of several trail underpasses.

Douglas County Planning Commission
East West Regional Trail - Douglas County Comprehensive Master PlanIn 2012, the Douglas County Planning Commission adopted the 2030 Parks, Trails and Open Space Master Plan. The plan , which can be read or downloaded in its entirety on the Douglas County website discusses the East West Regional Trail as well as other details of the Parks & Trails plan for the area.  The Plan touches on topics such as Growth Rates in Douglas County, Community Involvement, Community Health, and more.

The  Regional Connectivity section of the 2030 Parks, Trails and Open Space Master Plan states the following:

“Regional Connectivity Regional trail connections have been established in some portions of the County and remain undeveloped in others. East to west connectivity is provided in the High Line Canal corridor, and the C-470 and E-470 corridor. North to south regional trail connectivity occurs along Cherry Creek and, in the western portion of the County, via the High Line Canal, Waterton Canyon, Indian Creek and Roxborough State Park corridors.”

What Does the Future Hold?

According to the 2030 Parks, Trails and Open Space Master Plan, the American Discovery Trail is intended to connect the east and west coasts of the United States. The American Discovery Trail’s website says, “Stretching across more than 6,800 miles and 15 states, the ADT is the only coast-to-coast, non-motorized recreational trail. Linking communities, cities, parks, and wilderness, the ADT allows people to hike, bike or ride horses for an afternoon or a cross-country adventure.”
